Wesley snuff out mighty Chucky to advance in round 3

GM Wesley So eliminate GM Vasily Ianchuk in the second round of World Chess Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk/Russia with a score of 1.5-.5.

GM So will be facing Gata Kamsky in round 3.

Here is Ms Susan Polgar comment on Wesley round 2 game and advice on how to play against GM Gata Kamsky in round 3.

Wesley did exactly what he had to do to hold Ivanchuk. He played a "boring" opening with very little for Black to play for. He managed his clock sufficiently. Well done!
Now comes the next big task. Gata is a VERY tough player for anyone in match format. He is a grinder. He is very patient. He will not self destruct.

The weakest part of Gata's game is his opening. However, his middlegame and endgame skill is his strength. He is also mentally strong and he is a very experienced player. I know Gata for a long time. He played many big matches in his career.

Wesley MUST be very patient and be prepared to play long and intense games. It is very difficult for any player in the world to blow Gata off the board. He is a world-class defender.

Wesley needs to play aggressively but not risky. It is critical for Wesley NOT to get into time pressure against Gata.

Wesley drew first blood!

Wesley win his first game in the 2nd round of the world chess cup 2009 and beating no other than worlds number 8 GM Vasily Ivanchuk fide rated 2750!

This could have been a drawn game since GM Ivanchuk could have a perpetual check by move 23, but he pushed for a win! under estimating the strentgh of a filipino prodigy.

WGM Susan Polgar comment about the game and advice for Wesley.

Wesley did exactly what he had to do. Ivanchuk is not one to play for draw in difficult positions, especially with the White pieces. Ivanchuk pushed hard and got into severe time pressure. This is typical Ivanchuk since I have known him more than 2 decades ago back in the junior days.
It is very important for Wesley:

1. Not to get into time pressure. Let his opponent do that. Wesley needs time at critical points to take advantage of any available on the board opportunity.

2. Not to allow Ivanchuk to get into dynamic positions. Play a boring solid opening line and make Ivanchuk force the issues.

3. And again, not to play passively for "draw". This would be a mistake. Just play his game but don't take unnecessary risks.

I hope GMs Antonio and Laylo can stay a litte longer to help Wesley. Wesley will need that support.

TORONTO - Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore says Canadians have to stand on guard against creating two Canadas - one for the rich and one for the poor.

He says Canadians seem to be on a misguided quest to become more like Americans when it comes to health care. As a result, he tells a conference in Toronto, Canadians are straying from one of their core principles of looking out for one another.

Moore also took direct aim at the health-care bill before the U.S. Congress, saying it will enrich medical and drug companies.

He says Americans are spectacularly uninformed about Canada's health-care system, which he praised.

Moore says Canadians do not die or lose their homes because they cannot afford medical treatment, a situation millions of Americans face now and will continue to face.

lately im busy playing at gameknot.com, im playing about 30 game of correspondence chess, i find it fun, i had time to study games in the database as well familiarize myself in mid game pattern and end game pattern of a certain opening.

one very rude character that correspondence player poses is not resigning in a totally lost position, so if the time control is 30 day per move and the guy decide to move his piece every end of the month, you will end waiting 6 months in getting a mate.

id been to lazy lately posting blog post , i hope i can go over these .

btw ill be watching manny boxing match lately, i hope manny win!

id been so tired playing chess lately, i’m so lazy in studying my books, quite exciting is tal memorial tournament, but im tired of reading the quarrel among chess fans posted over the net.

I’d spent the good part of my day in the mall as well as watching the bodies exhibit at eaton place montreal.The number of people who watch is amazing, i consider it double the number of people who watch titanic artifact exhibition.

The exhibit is amazing,i feel so lucky to have experience it.

2. How long you been playing with macau chess federation and how did you qualify to represent its national pool?

Ive been playing for 3 years here in macau... I joined the Macau chess championship last 2007 and luckily won the tourney :)

3.Did you win titles in chess competition in the past?

nope.. as i said, my first official tournament was the 2008 chess olym.

4.How old are you? are you still studying? working?

im 22 years old now,.. Im currently working at the moment as warehouse attendant, planning to go to university when i save enough money for my studies..

5.At what age you learn how to play chess?

Hmm in not so sure about this one.. i think around 10 years old.. but i didnt really take it seriously before.. i only play with my cousins and friends..

6.Youre family name sound like tagalog word, Did you have your ancestral roots from Philippines?

I was born and grew up in cavite... I only did came here in macau when im 17 years old so that my mom can can attach me here and live together..

7.What/where from the philippines did they come from?

8. Do you have plans to make chess your lifetime career?

I dont know sir... as for my current situation here i guess i cant.. But well maybe if i can do better next time maybe ill take chess more seriously..

Its a bout a year since my account was suspended at gameknot.These after i violate the sites rule of making only one account, i just can't get enough games then, testing how serious the site in enforcing its policy i tried to make a double account, thing i regreat a lot and already ask apology in the past.

I once more get in contact with my past buddys, join there tournament and this time since im a paying member i could plat to the maximun of 50 games at the same time.
Choosing a 1 move per 10 day time allotment makes things easier.

to be familiar to game pattern im make sure to play the same opening in every 10 games i have, scotch as white and carokann as black.

I hope this could improve my chess.

Prior to Mrs So kibitz, members of So page are actively discussing the possible move of Wesley with regard to his education, his goin into college.Here's WGM/Polgar comment on the topic especially about the Texas Tech scholarship.

Susan Polgar: Texas Tech scholarship would include tuition and housing expenses. Students will also be given the opportunity to make additional spending money by spending a few hours a week teaching chess at many local schools.
All our titled players are given the opportunity to compete in many strong tournaments throughout the year. In fact, we do pay for the expenses for the players to compete in some (not all) of these events. I also work with them personally.
My job is to dissect the players' game, then help them maximize their areas of strength, as well as improving areas of weaknesses.
If a player needs to represent their countries in various competition (national championships, Olympiad, world cup, etc.), they are free to do that. All they need is to make arrangements with their professors to make up the work / tests.
There have been many good examples of strong players doing both (Onischuk, Shulman, Dr. Kosashvili, Dr. Sherzer, and me, etc.)
I do not advocate strong players to give up chess for college. It is possible for serious players / students to do both.

rybka analysis show an evaluation higher for the black when in fact the position is drawn.

i tried to ask my friend zanshin at chessgames.com about the position if what can he say about rybkas failure to identify the position as drawn.

here's what he got to say:

it's a draw despite the -2.0 evaluation, which I'm pretty sure is because of the material lead and advanced pawns. However, if you play through the moves, you will see that the lead never increases which means Black is not able to improve his position. It's because the White King just moves from e2 to d3 and back and the advanced pawns never get a chance to Queen. In fact, advanced pawns that cannot promote are a known weakness of engines.

In the evaluation i posted ,it only say 1.82 in favor of black at depth 14 but maybe zanshin analyze it with his engine in deeper mode for him to say rybkas analysis reach 2.0 in favor of black.

Rybkas weakness is that it can't identify position as this one as draw.

Mcgill University among top of the league

LONDON (AFP) - British and US universities dominate the top of a league table of universities worldwide published Thursday, but Oxford has slipped one place to joint fifth.

Harvard remains in top spot in the Times Higher Education league table, followed by Britain's Cambridge University then Yale in third place, with London's University College and Imperial College in fourth and fifth.

The top non-US and non-European universities are the Australian National University in 17th place, down one, and Canada's McGill University in 18th position, down two.

Letters were sent on Wednesday to community members urging them to donate, said Angelita Ogerio, president of the Federation of Filipino-Canadian Associations of Quebec.

The FFCAQ was one of several organizations pooling their resources to donate through the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, which has a branch in the Philippines.
A first shipment of goods will be sent Wednesday, Ogerio said, but it will take eight weeks to arrive at its destination.

The city of Montreal pledged $3,000 yesterday to help the Philippines and other countries of southeast Asia affected by the typhoon, while another $2,000 was donated by the borough of Côte des Neiges/ Notre Dame de Grâce, where 18 per cent of the population is Filipino.

Thanks to Malta Chess Federation for turning over my letter to the Aguilar sisters.

With all pride i want to let everybody know that we got two kababayan chess players playing under Malta Chess Federation.They are Filipina Aguilar and Jessieca Aguilar.

Kahit saan likas ang galing nating pilipino sa larangan ng ahedres.

Here are the questions I forwarded to miss Filipina Aguilar which she courteously replied.

1.How long hve you been plying with malta chess asociation?

3-4 years

2.How did you qualify to represent Malta national team?

I’d been living in Malta for the last 14 years.

3.are you related to another player named Aguilar in the Malta national team?

Jessieca Aguilar is my sister.

4. Do you have any plan to make chess as a lifetime career?

No. I only play chess as a hobby.

5.Is there enough incentive package in playing for the national team?

Malta Chess Federation is a small association. Being in the team is enough incentive for me.

6.Are you still going to school or focusing with chess fulltime?

I have a full time job as an accounting technician with Go plc. ( a telecommunication company in Malta ) because of that I cannot afford to focus my time in chess full time.

7. please tell us more about youre chess, your family.

I was born in Manila. I grew up in San Pablo City where I used to play chess when I was young. I used to compete in STRAA representing San Pablo City when I was in high school.

GM Eugene Torre and the Filipino common-law wife and child of the late Bobby
Fischer will appear in a documentary being filmed by BBC-HBO on the life of the
greatest chess player that ever pushed a pawn.

Torre , Marilyn and Jinky Young will provide the Philippine connection in Fischer’s
life starting with his early visits to the country in the early 70s to his romantic liaison
with Marilyn and the birth of Jinky in 2001. It was Torre who introduced Marilyn to the
late chess icon at the Baguio Golf and Country Club.
